The Brookfield Heritage Commission was created by warrant article passed at Town Meeting on 10 March 2009. The enabling legislation, RSA 674:44a reads as follows:

“A heritage commission may be established in accordance with RSA 673 for the proper recognition, use and protection of resources, tangible or intangible, primarily man-made, that are valued for historic, cultural, aesthetic, or community significance within their natural, built or cultural contexts.”

A Heritage Commission basically does for historical and cultural resources what the Conservation Commission does for natural resources:

  • advises and assists other local boards and commissions;

  • conducts inventories of historical and cultural resources;

  • educates the public on matters relating to historic preservation;

  • provides information on historic resources;

  • conducts research and publishes findings;

  • serves as a resource for revitalization efforts.

The Brookfield Heritage Commission can also accept and expend funds for a non-lapsing Heritage Fund, acquire and manage property, and hold preservation easements.

The first Commissioners are five in all:

Susan Brown

Carolyn Chase

Craig Evans – Selectmen’s Rep

Marilou MacLean

Ron Prior
